Conference “Europe and the Colonial Empires of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and
Eighteenth centuries in Literature and Film”

CALL FOR PAPERS
Literature and Film have been
working as true time machines. The reappearance of the historical or
historically themed novel and the continued popularity of the historical film
are evidence of the reader’s and the filmic audience’s interest in these
genres, as well as of the huge inspiration that authors and directors find in
the historical past.
The dialogue between Literature and
Film has been fruitful in recent years, in the field of inter-Arts Studies. The
mutual influence regarding the themes and narrative strategies have led to a
growing interest for Literature and Film studies in Academia.
In this sense, the Organising
Commission of this Conference, constituted by members of FCHS-UAlg, CLEPUL-FLUG
and CIAC-UAlg, proposes a debate of scientific nature for specialists and
whomever might be interested, to take place in the Faculadade de Ciências
Humanas e Sociais of the Universidade do Algarve, Gambelas Campus, in 20 and 21 October 2016.
There will be considered works
dealing with the following thematic areas:
1. Literature and Film
1.1. Theory and interdisciplinary
dialogue.
2. Historical novel
2.1. The “New Historical Novel” of
the twentieth century: problematics, themes and narrative strategies;
2.2. The representation of the
historical character and event in the “New Historical Novel”;
2.3. The sixteenth, seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries in the “New Historical Novel”.
3. Historical Film
3.1. The historical film and the
biopic: the representation of historical periods, episodes or historical characters
on film;
3.2. Authors and directors:
adaptations of the historical novel to cinema;
3.3. Cinema as a discourse about
the past and the director as an historian;
3.3. The representation of colonial
empires in film;
3.4. Cinema as a didactic tool in
the teaching of History.
Working languages: Portuguese,
English, Spanish and French.
Those interested in participating
in this conference are to send their communication proposals—title, abstract
and Curriculum Vitae—until 30 June
2016 in accordance to the norms of the Organisation. The proposals will be
anonymously scrutinised by the Scientific Commission of the Conference, being
the candidates subsequently informed of the final decision of acceptance or
non-acceptance.

between 300 and 350 words;
3) Curriculum Vitae shortened
(up to 15 lines).

Note:
1) the bank fees are the participants’ responsibility; 2) to demand a receipt
send, imperatively, the following information: full name, copy of the citizen
card/social security card or passport; complete address.
The
organisation intends the publication of the corresponding Conference Proceedings
with the communications approved by the Scientific Commission.
Publication
Norms:
1) In
the beginning of the original text, in bold, centred, font size 12, Times New Roman, line spacing of 1,5,
will be the following data: title of the article, name of the author and full
designation of the academic or scientific institution to which the author is
bound.
2) The
size of the original text cannot not surpass 12 pages, A4, line spacing of 1,5,
including five keywords, an initial abstract, maximum 10 lines, and the
bibliography.
3) The
redaction of the original text shall be redacted in Microsoft Word, in Times New
Roman, font size 12, being each page 34 lines long, in 1,5 line spacing,
with special indentation 1 cm. in the first line. Paragraphs with only one
sentence are to be avoided.
4) The
identification of sources, of books, periodical publications, and signed
articles, dated, from the Web will be immediately referenced after each
quotation, in parenthesis, indicating the last name, publication year: page or
pages, for instance: (Gago, 1990, 55).
5) The
in-text quotations are to be presented within quotation marks, not italic, being
the latter only used to highlight words or locutions. The direct quotations
(with transcription) that do not exceed three lines will appear within
quotation marks (« ») introduced in the body text. The remaining shall appear separate
from the body text in smaller font size (Times
New Roman, font size 11).
6) The
end of page references shall be presented, numbered, following the traditional
style, in the end of the page.
7) The
bibliographic references shall appear in the end of the article. They will have
to be in alphabetical order by the last names of the authors and
chronologically. They will assume the following style: Book: LAST NAME, First name (year). Title. Place of publication: Publisher, (eventual reference to the
first edition). Article: LAST NAME,
First name (year). «Title». In: LAST NAME, First name (org.). Title. Place of publication: Publisher,
(eventual reference to the first edition), pp.
